![]() The sugar signaling pathway and especially the well-known indicator of sucrose availability, trehalose-6-phosphate (T6P), were indicated to have a role in determining AXB fate in maize. In contrast, gibberellic acid (GA) biosynthesis and signaling were reduced in the tb1/ gt1 mutants, suggesting that the genes may promote AXB dormancy by downregulating the GA pathway. In this network, the phytohormonal signaling pathways of jasmonic acid (JA) and abscisic acid (ABA) promote bud dormancy, and are upregulated by TB1 both directly and indirectly via GT1. Using a combination of Chip-seq, RNA-seq, and metabolite measurements, recently showed that the three genes, namely TB1, gt1, and tru1, form a regulatory network in which TB1 is at the top of the hierarchy. The tru1 gene acts downstream of tb1, encodes an ankyrin-repeat domain protein with a BTB/POZ motif necessary for protein–protein interactions, and is directly activated by TB1. However, in some plant species, the role of apical dominance is not that strong and other factors regulate axillary bud (AXB) fate, as seen with the strawberry (see Section 2.4 on the regulation of the strawberry plant architecture). A change in the strength of apical dominance has major influences on plant form, as exemplified by the domestication of maize (see Section 2.1). The major endogenous signal regulating AXM fate is apical dominance, i.e., the inhibitory effect exerted by the SAM over AXMs (processes related to apical dominance are reviewed in Schneider et al. Depending on the plant species, the fates of different meristems are determined by endogenous or exogenous signals, or a mixture of both (reviewed in ). AXMs can develop into vegetative or generative branches, or remain dormant. SAMs can either keep on producing new vegetative plant tissues or, when induced to flower, differentiate into inflorescence meristems. The fates and relative growth rates of different meristems on the plant depend on both endogenous and exogenous factors, and determine the final form of plant architecture. The fundamental above-ground plant form is endogenously dictated at the shoot apical meristem (SAM), which gives rise to phyllotactic patterning, i.e., the arrangement of leaves (recently reviewed in ) each leaf is accompanied by an axillary meristem (AXM), located at leaf axil (for a review on AXM initiation, see, e.g., ). We also explain what is known about the genetic and environmental control of plant architecture in these species, and how further changes in plant architectural traits could benefit the horticultural sector. We focus specifically on the determination of the axillary meristem fate and review how plant architecture may change even drastically because of altered axillary meristem fate. In this review, we select a number of important horticultural and agricultural plant species as examples of how changes in plant architecture affect the cultivation practices of the species. Fortunately, research in many crop species has demonstrated that a relatively small number of genes has a large effect on axillary meristem fates. Knowledge of the genetic mechanisms regulating plant architecture is needed for precision breeding, especially for determining feasible breeding targets. Improving plant architecture by breeding facilitates denser plantations, better resource use efficiency and even mechanical harvesting. However, the fates of axillary meristems located in leaf axils have a great influence on plant architecture and affect the harvest index, yield potential and cultural practices. Shoot apical meristem gives rise to the fundamental plant form by generating new leaves. Above-ground plant architecture is dictated to a large extent by the fates and growth rates of aerial plant meristems. ![]()

If you’d just given it to me as a pen, I wouldn’t have known it was a gadget. There is definitely something quite spooky or magical about seeing live replication on an iPhone or iPad of whatever someone is writing or drawing in a basically ordinary notepad! Here’s a quick video:Īnd here’s what Steph has to say about the feel when writing: It’s also surprisingly light, at 27 grams, which doesn’t feel notably different to the Apple Pencil 2’s 21 grams. It’s black metal, with a gunmetal grey cap, and I don’t think anyone would look twice at it unless they happened to recognize the brand name. Finally, if you really object to paying for them, or want to create something customized to your own needs, Livescribe provides free templates which let you print your own microdot paper in various formats. But they are not crazily priced compared to regular ones of equal quality, and there are third-party ones available too – including Moleskin. Of course, that means buying special notebooks, which do carry a price premium over standard ones. The pen needs to be used with paper which contains barely-visible microdots, which help it track the movement of the pen across the paper. If using a camera to capture pen movements sounds pretty damn clever, there is a slight cheat involved. To activate the microphone, you tap a recording symbol that is printed on each page of the notepads. This would obviously be useful for things like lectures and interviews, where you can jot down summary notes and then easily play the accompanying audio for any section of it. You can activate this when you want to capture live sound alongside your notes. Second – and this is what distinguishes it from most other digital pens on the market – there’s a microphone. You can choose the format in which your words are stored: either the original handwritten text, or it can use built-in optical character recognition to turn them into plain text. It can also feed your notes into Evernote. It does this via a number of different cloud services, including Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneNote. It can do this live – whatever you write or draw appearing on your iDevice in real-time – or it can store more than 1,000 US letter pages worth of writing and drawing for syncing later. This records everything the pen writes and transmits a digital version of it to a companion device – an iPhone or an iPad. First, a camera, pointed down at the nib. It’s a conventional pen, which writes on paper, with a couple of additions. I may have no use for one personally, but it’s definitely something I consider a cute gadget. What is the Livescribe Symphony digital pen anyway? ![]() So this is effectively a review by proxy: I’m just reporting back on her experiences. I love doodling, for example, so something that started as very straightforward notetaking becomes art. I love the way I can completely make a notebook my own. Writing on paper is a sensory experience, the feel of it, the smell of the paper, the textures that affect the way the nib moves across the page. I love the feel of it, the same way I love paper books rather than ebooks. All of which doesn’t make me an obvious candidate for a digital pen designed for use with paper …īut while I view paper notepads as quaint historical artifacts, my girlfriend loves them, for reasons I’ll let her explain. I did eventually find a vague excuse to buy an Apple Pencil, but even that was a bit of a stretch and I still don’t use it for anything else. If it’s shorter, I’ll generally dictate to Siri. ![]() If I’m writing anything more than a few lines, I’ll use a keyboard. I haven’t handwritten anything substantive for about three decades. This served to rationalise and replace almost 30 previous vagrancy acts. Otherwise, there was little major change in the legislation until the passage of the 1824 Vagrancy Act. The Law of Settlement and Removal was passed in 1662, providing for vagrants to be sent back to their places of origin (although in many cases this was difficult to establish among a largely illiterate and rootless population). ![]() For example, branding of the person literally served to stigmatise them as deviant, whereas enslavement and banishment were responses with clear spatial dimensions ( Beier, 1985). It is not until the sixteenth century, however, that we see the first real criminalisation of itinerancy. The mid-fourteenth century saw the introduction of a series of measures designed to restrict people travelling in search of work, with levels of punishment increasing steadily with time. The earliest-known attempts to control what was then known as vagrancy are usually dated back to Britain in the fourteenth century ( Beier, 1985), although in fact the earliest-known measure was a statute in 1274 restricting almsgiving by monasteries to itinerant people ( Chambliss, 1964). If you thought the original was too much, you might need to take more stock of what you’re looking for in a video game before I recommend this game to you.Įspecially early on, Spelunky 2 features more running into a brick wall until you learn the rhythm and secrets. If you reached the depths of the secrets of the original and craved more, Spelunky 2 is perfect for you. Spelunky 1 has a relatively linear path from beginning to end, whereas the sequel can hurtle you in various directions much sooner. A lot of that comes from the open-ended nature. In comparison to the original, Spelunky 2 is more inventive but also far more challenging. A variety of NPCs appear throughout different levels, tasking you with various side quests as you work your way through the worlds. There are enough new twists to make it not feel similar, though. It’s been a while since I played the first game and I definitely had a sense of deja vu in some spots. A lot of the themes from the original are replicated, but usually expanded with some new enemies and twists. The variety of levels is also greatly increased, with a lot of less arcane divergent paths and more deliberate ones (though don’t worry: there are still some bonkers “how could a human ever do this?” secrets). You only start with four playable, but there are many to find in the caverns and dungeons you explore. What’s fun is so many of the characters are references or descendents to the cast from the original. After the events of the original game, Ana grew up and is now on the moon with fellow explorers trying to find her parents. The story setup is a little different, as now you play the child of the original explorer, Ana Spelunky. You’re still spelunking around different areas making use of a finely tuned jump, bombs, ropes, and other found or purchased weaponry. Spelunky 2 basically takes everything from the first game and makes it a little bit different but largely better. With how much I appreciated the first game, I’ve been waiting to play Spelunky 2 on Switch since it was announced, and I’m happy to say it doesn’t disappoint. I view the original Spelunky as one of the finest games of its kind, even if a lot of my enjoyment has come from watching others find all the secrets as I make it through the main quest by the skin of my teeth. The original Xbox 360 release (also available on Switch) is almost a decade old (and even older if you count the Classic version). It's tough not to smile when you've just watched your close friends accidentally murder a shopkeeper, a turkey, and your entire expedition with one carelessly thrown bomb.Spelunky is a foundational game for a variety of reasons, whether it’s the ingenuity of its level design or its placement as a bellwether for the roguelike indie revolution. While it seems easy to let the rage of defeat consume you, I genuinely haven't laughed harder playing a video game with friends in quite some time. The inevitable blame game that follows these unfortunate accidents will unquestionably put your relationships to the test. In my experience playing with friends, they are often directly responsible for a solid 80% of my deaths. If you smack a friend, they will be launched forward and briefly rendered unconscious.Ĭombine these multiplayer hazards with the already-challenging stages, and you have yourself a recipe for utter chaos. What about your primary means of defense against enemies, the whip? Yep. If you throw a bomb and your allies aren't aware of your intentions, they might find themselves caught in the lethal blast radius. If you do this above a pool of lava, this player will unfortunately fall and be incinerated. Accidentally jumping on a friend's head knocks them to the ground, leaving them unable to act for a few seconds. But be warned, every action you take will likely have extreme consequences for your fellow spelunkers. Up to four players can descend into the hellish depths of Spelunky 2 through online or local multiplayer. ![]() |
